The International Buddhist Education Center (IBEC) was founded as an English-Language Dharma Education project which, while open to all who are interested in the Buddha’s teachings, is designed to serve the youth of the Vietnamese community in Southern California. An Giao Roshi is a founding, teaching member of this organization and serves on the Board of IBEC.

Both Roshi and Su Co will be giving talks at their White Lotus Dharma Center in English at 2:30 p.m. on the first and fifth Sundays of each month in 2013.  Usually a Vietnamese translator attends and helps out, if necessary.

Dharma Talk: Right Speech

October 28, 2012: Su Co’s talk on Right Speech (Pali: samma-vaca), which is the third “step” on the Noble Eight-Fold Path (the first “level” of the section of Ethical Conduct). “Step” and “level” are in quotes because it’s only too easy to look at the list as sequential and/or hierarchical. While that is one way of approaching the practice (we’ve got to start somewhere!), as with many of the Buddha’s teachings, we find many things happening concurrently and we build our understanding/actions up, down, skipping around. However, if you step off the Path, you will certainly find one think/thing leads to another…

Note: The website with targeted behavior modification (Su Co does have some of the nifty violet wristbands to give out, if you want to try it) mentioned in the talk is www.aComplaintFreeWorld.org.

September 9, 2012: Su Co tells the story of Kolita Mogallana (Sankrit: Maha Maudgalyayana, Vietnamese: Muc Kien Lien), one of the Buddha’s great Arahant Disciples, who provided the impetus for the Ullambana Ceremony we celebrate each year (Vietnamese: Vu Lan).

3-part Dharma Talk: It’s Not About Enlightenment

In July and August 2012, Su Co Tâm Hu’o’ng gave three Dharma Talks related to Enlightenment/Nirvana and a question, “What did Dogen mean when he said, ‘You have to die in Zazen’?”

Part 1: It’s not about Enlightenment  (Unfortunately, the degraded memory card — now retired and little-mourned — affected the recording of the first of the three talks.

While we see if anything from that talk is save-able, see if #2 and #3 make any sense…)
